Meet Hoo Eek Kee – A filmmaker, producer, and creator of The Spice Islands of The World

Mr Hoo Eek Kee is a Malaysian who started working in the film industry when he was just a teenager. Growing up in Malaysia’s multi-cultural society with a taste for local cuisines of Malay, Chinese, Indian as well as Western. A renowned and versatile Film Director and Producer in the SouthEast Asia region, Hoo Eek Kee is multi-lingual. Besides English, he speaks Mandarin, various Chinese dialects, Malay and Bahasa Indonesia.

After establishing his film and video production companies in Jakarta, Indonesia more than 20 years ago, he discovered even more enticing treats, particularly the wide range of variety of Indonesian cuisines. Eek Kee travels extensively during the course of his business. He has done work all over Asia and America. He had worked with Nick Nolte and director John Milius in a Hollywood movie “Farewell to the King”. He has directed ad campaign for Malaysian tourism “To know Malaysia is to love Malaysia”, and plenty of automobiles, cigarettes, food & beverages brands as well as corporate videos for publicly listed companies in Indonesia.

Combining the creativity of his film direction with his love of good and exciting food, he has developed his talents to become a leading explorer of the culinary world. He uses his extensive knowledge and love of good food to open the mind and excite the palettes of TV viewers and surfers in the digital domain. His use of fresh ingredients and continuing search for knowledge of vegetables, herbs and spices is evident by the experimental rooftop farm he has a few steps away from his studio kitchen. With his love of food he has created and directed a program called Wonderful Indonesia “The Spice Islands of The World” that is now being aired all over the world.

Mr Hoo Eek Kee is an ideal example of what can be achieved through creativity and an enduring love of food from roadside stalls to fancy restaurants.
