If you are interested in learning more about Indonesian tradition, in which there are plenty to discover, Indonesian Heritage Society is the institution to enrich your knowledge. A long-standing organization for expatriates and Indonesians alike, this place teaches members knowledge of places and history beyond popular tourist destinations. Run mostly by foreigners, this small but efficient non-profit organization offers opportunity to learn more about Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage. This all-volunteer multinational has been providing an outlet for discovering the culture, life, history and art of this vast archipelago for 42 years.

Being a member enables participation in Explorer Groups that visit places of interest in Jakarta including markets, museums, historical and cultural sites. Members will also be able to do Heritage Tours to various locations in Java to further-flung islands such as Sumba, West Timor or Sulawesi in addition to lectures and study groups on topics such as literature, ceramics, and contemporary art history. There’s also a volunteer  program option for variety of positions in IT, Publishing, School Programs, Library, Museum Tours and plenty more. It is a good way to connect with fellow citizens and make new friends from different part of the world. 

The Indonesian Heritage Society conducts free English tours of the National Museum at 09:30 every Tuesday and Thursday and 10:30 every second Saturday and last Sunday in the month; For other languages, please contact the Indonesian Heritage Society Library (+62) 21 572-5870 or email museumtours@heritagejkt.org. Additional days and times or individual tours can also be arranged for embassies, companies, and schools.
