Entering her 6th year of living in Jakarta, she’s actively involved in a charity organization named Yayasan Kechara Indonesia. Introduced by the organization founder, Ms Valentina Suhendra during one of the MCJ gathering in Hotel Batavia 2 years ago, she was being told about her doing charity work in the cemetery area. Intrigued by the fact that charity work can done in such area, Shio Wei told herself that she must join this charity work one day to find out. The organization activities are strictly non discriminative of religion, race, gender or culture, amongst others includes:

Food Distribution – Every weekend, we distribute 400 food packages to the urban poor in a few cemetery area in Jakarta. In the short term, we provide basic sustenance for the urban poor. Eventually, we hope to provide a permanent soup kitchen building as a place of safety, “off street”, for the distribution of hot food and medical treatment facilities for the urban poor, whilst continuing to provide street food delivery to those who are unable to come to the centre. We also have a Food Bank whereby donors can donate any dry food items to be distributed to the needy. Every year during the Ramadhan month, we distribute Sembako to the needy too.

Student Sponsorship – The mission is to provide assistance for students from less fortunate family background to enable them to pursue higher education as it is pivotal in reversing the intricate vicious cycle of poverty. We believe that access to knowledge will lead to lasting change in their lives. The Student Sponsorship Program strives to address the root cause of poverty and provide practical and sustainable solution towards improving the standard of living and overall well-being.

Medical Sponsorship
– Our mission is to provide basic medical care for the urban poor. In the future, we hope to provide a permanent building as a place for the urban poor to seek basic medical treatment.

Others – We also run on ad-hoc basis for used clothes and stationery distribution to the needy.

Our motto is Compassion Knows no Barriers

She also did Climb-for-Charity sometime last year. What started out as a simple gesture turned into a bigger cause in which when she started to pledge in doing this hiking fundraising in Summit Polset, France last year and started contacting her friends across different countries from Asia to USA to Europe, she received such an overwhelming response and support from all of them. It was also a positive encouragement for many people who have seen her training photos in which they have started to take initiative to donate in support of her good cause of action. Not to mention all the wonderful and warmhearted people she get to meet.

Her next climb will be in this month in which she’ll take up a challenge to climb Mount Sumeru. In line with Yayasan Kechara motto, Compassion Knows No Barriers, all the five participants (consist of Ms. Valentina Suhendra, Mr. Yudho, Mr. Soo Woon Loong, Ms. Agustiana Hyang and herself) who took up this 2013 Hiking Challenge, came from various backgrounds and beliefs. All of them voluntarily enrolled in this challenge are bound by a strong common value of compassion in assisting others. The idea of taking up this challenge is to show that they are committed to their cause to better the lives of the unfortunate and help those in need regardless of their creed and beliefs. The trip will be self-funded by the hikers. All the proceed and donations from this challenge will go toward supporting the growing charitable activities such as food and other distributions, students, medical sponsorships, disaster relief and administrative costs.
